Kingdom – My first collection of poetry!

Yesterday I handed in my first poetry collection as the Dissertation component of my MA Creative Writing and Pedagogic Studies.

It felt like what I imagine it feels like to give birth, well mentally rather than physically.

I had been working on this collection for 2 years formally, but actually really I had been working on this collection for my whole entire life.

It is a deeply personal collection covering issues of race and identity, as well as relationships – with a back drop of mythology and spirituality.

I feel so proud of what I have completed, and it was hard to hand it in.

I spent  a whole week with it bound and completed before I was due to hand in, and it felt like I needed every one of those seven days to truly release it out into the world.

It truly feels like my baby.

Those who know me know that I have never really shared my work with friends and family, so completing the MA and sharing my work regularly has been a lesson in self-confidence.

To see it all bound in a design of my choosing made me so unbelievably happy.

I walked around in a post-writing haze for the whole week!

Yet still in those quiet moments before sleep, or in the bath, lines for new poems came to me.

And so I begin to write again. A brother or sister for the first.

I wanted to share this all with you to encourage you all to reach for those dreams you may have.

This is really only my first steps into what could become a new career for me, but it is those first steps that mean the most.

Take a step towards your dreams, I guarantee the happiness you experience will be worth every tumble and fall.

Much love always!
